What has been and what’s next
May 15th, 2012Have not blogged for awhile so how it’s been and what’s new for us?
The school year just zipped by with many things happening in our midst. Both of my boys got promoted to senior brown in their martial arts class. Two piano recitals graced the month of December with my older son having the privilege of playing as a guest in one of them.
My middle schooler joined the Science Olympiad homeschool team representing our county. The Frederick county homeschool team joined the Science Olympiad - small school league division for the very first time. My son did 4 events namely Keep the Heat, Optics, Mousetrap Vehicle and Anatomy and he, together with his partners, placed first in all of them for the regional competition held last Feb 25th. Their team then qualified for the state competition but because of a scheduled vacation, my son missed it. What a bummer! Nevertheless, the team did well for a first timer at the state tournament. I must add that the team who won over-all first place and will represent the state of Maryland in the National Science Olympiad on May 18-19 in Florida is a homeschool team from Montgomery county. Hurray for homeschoolers!
My whole family took that four-week scheduled vacation to the tropics in March-April and enjoyed the white sandy beaches and tropical weather and was renewed for another homeschool endeavor. Though the school year is ending, this is the time of year when I get ready for the next school year. Choosing curriculum, planning courses, and if possible, typing in a whole year’s worth of activities for every subject. A lot of work but thanks to the Courses-Import, I can just “recycle” some of the courses and I do not have to re-invent the wheel. So I did Course-Import for my science and math courses. I have finished “importing” for Saxon Algebra 1/2 for my 7th grader and Saxon Geometry for my 11th grader. Physical Science for my 7th grader and still working on the Human Anatomy and Physiology activities for my 11th grader. Still a lot more to tackle on: World History for mid school, Government and Economics, Intro to Psychology, more Java programming work, and Writing and Literature courses for both. On top of that, I also need to think about what to do about college .. but that will be blog for another day!
