Merging Activities-time not updating

I need some help....when I merge two activities the time allotted for each individual activity is not being summed. I had one activity that was scheduled for 20 minutes and a second activity that was scheduled for 10 minutes. My son decided to complete both activities so I merged and resequenced the two activities and I expected the time to show a total of 30 spent on that particular lesson for the day. Instead, the system kept the original first time of 20 minutes.

Is that supposed to happen like that? Doesn't is make more sense to add the time when merging to scheduled activities? Thanks in advance for any help.

It was done on purpose - not to add up. Merging two activities in one course (done in one day) initially would mean that the child was quick and did both activities in the time allotted for the course for one day.However, it could also mean that the child wants to do the next activity which is scheduled for the next day and used up extra time to finish it and this would double the time. In that case, you just need to edit the duration.
