How do I record books read or used?

Our state requires us to keep a record of all books used and read during the year. Since there is no book log function, I'm not sure where to log these. I had created a "Literature" course and logged in the information of the book as an activity, but I don't know if this will show up on a report as I need it to, and I don't really wish to log the book reading each day, if I don't need to. Should I record all the books individually as resources? We probably read hundreds of books through the school year, so I need an accurate and easy way to record these. Also, what would you recommend for logging books read by the students individually, not associated with any course?

On Today, there is a tab on the left side that says Hobby Log - this will log books, cds, audio cds, etc that the child did for extra reading. This is a log per student and not associated with any course.
