total hours doesn't seem to be correct

I am looking for the total number of hours completed on each course.

I generated a course report and there is a number "Total hours" at the top of the report. Is this total hours assigned or hours actually completed.
IS there another place to be looking for the completed hours per course.

When you generate the report, there is a checkbox that says "Show completed activities only" - check that and it will generate a report with the completed activities and the total duration only for the completed activities. If it does not match your calculation, please let us know what is missing.
